Start your journeys in Amman with a building entrance and a return plan. A map pin in the right neighbourhood can still leave you on the wrong side of a hill. For short errands around Jabal Amman, walking may be straightforward; for a journey across the city, compare the whole bus trip with the fare shown by a transport app.
Students at German Jordanian University (GJU) should save their actual Jabal Amman teaching building. The main campus near Madaba is a separate destination. Our campus and student guide helps you distinguish the locations before planning a commute.
Prices and budget examples are in Jordanian dinars (JOD).

How to plan and pay for a bus trip
Use the application linked from the bus operator’s website; it is listed as Amman Bus. The operator describes prepaid cards and virtual QR-code tickets, with electronic top-up options. Cash is not accepted on these buses. The driver does not sell the prepaid card; use an authorised sales point or the application. Operator payment and card guidance.
- Install the operator-linked app before leaving your Wi-Fi connection. Allow location access if you want the planner to use your position.
- Set your departure point and exact destination. Read the suggested stops, direction, expected arrival and fare.
- Have a loaded travel card or an appropriate virtual ticket ready before boarding. Keep your phone charged if your ticket is on it.
- Check the vehicle’s route number, board at the correct stop and follow the validation instructions.
- Watch the stops as you travel, and check the return service before staying late at your destination.
The application listing explains that it shows route options, stops and fares, lets cardholders check and recharge balances, and offers a one-time QR ticket for people without a prepaid card. Amman Bus application instructions. Follow the operator’s current app links when installing so that you get the intended service.
Build a transport budget from your timetable
For a simple example, two JOD 0.60 rides on each of 20 study days total JOD 24. That assumes one paid ride each way. Add any separately charged transfers, trips outside class and the cost of getting to the stop. It is an arithmetic example, not a university transport package or a monthly unlimited ticket.
Keep a short record during your first week: where you went, how many rides you paid for and whether the return was practical. Use your actual timetable before buying more credit than you need. If classes are close enough to walk comfortably, you may need the bus mainly for shopping and social trips.
Taxis and app-booked cars
For an app booking, set the destination before requesting the ride and read the fare and payment method. Place the pickup pin where a car can stop legally. Check the registration and driver details against the app before getting in, and keep communication within the booking where possible.
For a street taxi, settle how the fare will be charged before the journey begins. Carry a payment backup and ask for a receipt if you need to reclaim work expenses. For a non-governmental organisation (NGO) assignment, ask your employer about approved transport, expense records and any limits on field travel.
Amman’s airport has separate collection arrangements. Uber provides an airport pickup page and directs passengers to the app for their assigned pickup instructions. Use those instructions after booking, including the actual meeting point. Uber airport pickup guidance. The airport-to-Jabal-Amman guide explains the other arrival choices.
Walking around Jabal Amman
Try your campus walk in daylight before relying on it for an early class. Check crossings and the condition of steps, and notice where the pavement narrows. A staircase can shorten a route but make it unsuitable for a suitcase, pushchair or someone avoiding steps. Carry less on your first grocery trip so you can judge the climb home.
Choose footwear with grip, carry drinking water and adjust the walk for heat or rain. When the route is unfamiliar, stay on public streets and use marked access rather than cutting through a residential courtyard. For a leisure walk, start with Rainbow Street and First Circle or our downtown route.
Access needs and a useful backup
If steps, uneven surfaces or long standing are a problem, plan from the entrance you will actually use. Ask the operator or venue about the required vehicle and stop access. An accessible bus does not guarantee an accessible pavement at both ends. For a car, describe a folding mobility aid or bulky equipment before booking so the vehicle fits.
Save your home address offline and keep enough battery for the return. Arrange a backup when a late appointment could run beyond the service you planned to use. A reliable return is particularly useful when carrying shopping or coming back from an evening event.
