Jordan Explorer: price, Petra days and visa fee rules

Jordan Explorer explained: the JOD 75 pass, two consecutive Petra days, included attractions, visa fee rules, a cost comparison and a two-day plan.

Jordan Explorer gives you two consecutive days at Petra. It suits a trip where you want time for the main route on one day and a separate walk on the next, without fitting both into one long visit. The package does not add a different set of attractions elsewhere in Jordan.

Jordan Explorer costs JOD 75 and covers 2 consecutive days at Petra. It is a sightseeing package with a conditional tourist entry visa fee waiver. For immigration requirements covering your whole visit, use our Jordan visa and residence guide.

Official package prices and Jordan Pass benefits. The Petra day allowance is the reason to choose between packages; the names do not describe separate visa classes.

Who should choose this package?

Choose Explorer when you can reserve two neighbouring dates for Petra and stay nearby between them. It is a practical middle option if a single day feels tight but a third day would take time away from the rest of your route.

Wanderer is JOD 5 cheaper and covers one Petra day. Expert is JOD 5 more and covers three consecutive days. Explorer earns its place when the second day has a purpose: a separate route, a slower visit or time to return to something you would otherwise rush past.

What admission includes

Included placesHow to use them in your plans
PetraUse the package’s daytime allowance for the site visits described below.
Amman Citadel and Roman TheatreConsider these for the Amman part of your trip.
Jerash, Ajloun Castle and Umm QaysChoose northern stops that fit your route.
Wadi Rum and Karak CastlePlan these around your journey south; desert activities require their own bookings.

These are examples from the official participating attraction list. Included entry does not reserve accommodation or make travel between places part of the pass. Choose the stops you want to visit before deciding whether the package is good value.

Does Jordan Explorer save you money?

For an adult international visitor paying the standard accommodated-visitor Petra rate and the ordinary single-entry visa fee, the comparison is:

PurchaseAmount
2-day Petra ticket on its ownJOD 55
Ordinary single-entry visa on its ownJOD 40
Those two items bought separatelyJOD 95
Jordan ExplorerJOD 75
Difference if the visa waiver appliesJOD 20 less with the pass

The ticket rates come from Petra’s official ticket service; the entry charge comes from the Ministry visa fee schedule. The difference is a calculation using those charges and the package price, before transport or other services.

If you are exempt from the visa fee, that JOD 40 is not a saving you can claim. Against the corresponding Petra ticket alone, this package costs JOD 20 more. You would then need to value the other included visits to decide whether buying the pass suits your trip. Special resident, child or nationality ticket rates also require a different comparison.

The comparison uses Petra’s accommodated-visitor category, which applies to visitors staying at least one night in Jordan. That ticket category is separate from the pass’s two-night visa-waiver condition. Source: Petra ticket categories.

Visa eligibility and the minimum stay

For the tourist fee waiver, buy before arrival and stay at least two nights, or three days, in Jordan. The pass does not remove nationality approval requirements. Source: visa waiver conditions.

Some passports require prior approval; a qualifying residence permit or other exception may affect the route. A pass purchase should follow the entry route for the passport you will present. For example, plan two Petra days together, then move on to Wadi Rum. Leaving for the desert between Petra visits breaks up the dates and defeats the reason for choosing Explorer. Put the accommodation nights into your itinerary before buying the pass.

What you must budget for separately

  • Transport, hotels, food and services you arrange for the trip.
  • Petra by Night, guides and ground transport are excluded.
  • Each attraction normally permits one visit; the extra Petra dates are the multi-day exception.
  • Packages cannot be upgraded or downgraded after purchase.

How to buy and keep the documents

  1. Select Jordan Explorer through the official Jordan Pass purchase page. Review the package before paying.
  2. Use an email account you can access during the trip, complete the traveller information carefully and save the payment confirmation.
  3. Keep the emailed pass available offline and print a copy. Keep the separate e-visa with your passport.
  4. Present the pass for scanning at participating sites. Carry your ID and keep the documents until your trip is finished.

The issuer explains the emailed pass and attraction scans on its how-to-use page. Treat purchase, border entry and attraction admission as separate moments when you may need your documents.

Pass dates, visa dates and delayed travel

Eligible purchasers receive an emailed e-visa valid three months from purchase. Before expiry, request a free three-month Tourism Ministry extension if delayed. After that extension expires, visa fees apply; the sightseeing ticket remains valid for three months from entry. Source: checkout notice.

Attraction use expires one month after the first site visit. Source: attraction validity. Put both the issued visa expiry and the attraction-use deadline in your travel notes. The extra Petra days must also fit the package’s own consecutive-day allowance.

A suggested Petra plan for Jordan Explorer

StageSuggested plan
Before the first visitKeep the two Petra dates together. A proposed Monday visit and Wednesday return do not fit the consecutive-day condition.
Day oneTake the Siq approach to the Treasury and continue along the main route towards the Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street and Qasr al-Bint at a pace that suits you.
Between visitsReview how far you walked and choose the next route accordingly. Leave your pass and ID ready for the following day.
Day twoConsider a separate Monastery walk if it fits your ability and the site’s current access arrangements. The conventional route continues uphill beyond the end of the main trail.

Two admission days let you separate visits, but the pass does not arrange the walks. If you want the Monastery back route, discuss the guide and transfer with the Visitor Centre in advance. Avoid assuming a second entrance or a vehicle ride is automatically included.

The Tourism Ministry describes the main route through the Siq and Treasury, continuing to the Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street and Qasr al-Bint. Its conventional Monastery route climbs beyond that main route. Source: official Petra route descriptions. The Petra trail guide distinguishes separate guided routes and their charges.

Carry water and wear shoes you are comfortable walking in. Discuss route access at the Visitor Centre, set a turn-back time and keep the transport out of Wadi Musa realistic. These are planning suggestions, not a fixed tour schedule or an assurance that every route is open.

Compare all three Jordan Pass packages

PackagePricePetra allowance
Jordan WandererJOD 70One day
Jordan ExplorerJOD 752 consecutive days
Jordan ExpertJOD 803 consecutive days

Keep the Petra dates on the calendar while comparing. The lowest useful package is the one that covers the visits you intend to make. Buying more days will not reduce your hotel or transfer costs.

Is Explorer useful if you only want the Treasury?

If your whole Petra plan is one visit to the Treasury and back, the extra day may go unused. Explorer becomes more useful when you want a separate walk or prefer to spread the visit across two days. Choose the additional admission because it fits your plans, rather than because the difference in price seems small.

Before paying

  • Confirm the entry route for your passport and the nights you will actually spend in Jordan.
  • Reserve the Petra dates you can use and match them to the package.
  • Check whether a visa exemption, resident rate or child admission changes the cost comparison.
  • Add the services you need to the budget and keep the pass and e-visa documents available.
