Prepare for winter in Amman before the first wet morning changes your route. Keep warm layers, a waterproof outer layer and suitable shoes ready, and know who will confirm any change to classes or work. The temperature outside is only one part of the day; a long session sitting at a desk needs its own plan for comfort.

What the climate figures mean

The World Meteorological Organization’s Amman table gives January a mean daily minimum of 3.6°C and maximum of 12.3°C, with 63.4mm mean monthly rainfall and 11 rain days. Amman climate averages. These are averages, not an overnight limit or a schedule of when rain will fall. Pack for the conditions you may meet, and use the actual forecast for each trip.

The seasons guide shows the broader pattern across a stay. If you arrive in warm weather, keep winter items somewhere you can easily reach when conditions change.

Set up a rain-day travel plan

Part of the dayPractical preparation
Leaving homeCheck the official forecast, warnings and the message channel used by your course or employer.
WalkingChoose the route for its crossings and footing, not simply the shortest line on the map.
Car or bus journeyAllow flexibility and check the actual pickup or service information.
ReturningKeep a charged phone, a saved address and a layer for the evening.
A change or cancellationConfirm it with the institution or operator responsible.

Keep documents and electronics protected from rain, and avoid carrying more bags than you can manage on a slippery route. A change from walking to a paid ride should have a place in your own contingency budget. The transport guide explains normal journey choices; conditions and official instructions determine whether a particular journey should go ahead.

Use weather warnings and avoid floodwater

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate (PSD) warns against approaching or crossing flowing flood channels, wadis and accumulated water, even when the level looks low. It also advises following official weather bulletins and avoiding inundated roads. Public Security Directorate winter guidance. Do not use a shallow-looking crossing as a shortcut.

Check the Jordan Meteorological Department forecast before departure and again when plans change. A social-media photograph without a location and time is not confirmation of the route you intend to use. If an organiser cancels an outdoor trip because of a warning, choose another activity instead of trying to reproduce the route independently.

Confirm the unit’s heating arrangements

Ask which appliance or system is available, how to operate it, who maintains it and how its energy use is paid for. Keep the model’s instructions and the repair contact together. A general photograph of an apartment is not enough to establish how heating works in a particular room.

The PSD’s winter campaign calls for safe, checked heating appliances, adequate ventilation, no refuelling while an appliance is operating and no heaters left burning while people sleep. Official winter heating guidance. Follow the specific appliance instructions and ask the responsible contact about any fault; do not improvise repairs or substitute a cooking appliance for room heating.

Agree the household routine if equipment is shared. Confirm when the heating is used, which areas it serves and how costs are allocated. Keep meter or bill information where the agreed arrangement requires it. A monthly figure from another building cannot establish your own winter bill.

Clothes, laundry and everyday shopping

Choose layers that can be combined and adjusted when moving between outdoors and indoors. Keep an outer layer suitable for rain, socks and footwear you can dry, and a spare change for days when you get wet. Try the walking shoes before relying on them for a full campus day.

Ask where clothes can be dried and what equipment is available before planning a large wash. Leave enough clean clothing for the actual drying time. Report persistent dampness, leaks or equipment problems through the agreed contact and describe the affected area with a clear photograph if appropriate.

Shop for the meals you can prepare with the facilities available. The cooking-for-one guide includes small quantities and leftover storage. Keep a modest supply of ordinary essentials so that a wet day does not force a separate shopping trip, while avoiding bulk purchases you cannot store.

Study and work when plans change

For German Jordanian University (GJU), use the programme’s official notices to confirm teaching arrangements. Check the particular Jabal Amman building and any revised room or submission instructions. If a class moves online, confirm the access link, deadline and which activities the change covers.

For a non-governmental organisation (NGO) assignment, follow the employer’s travel and remote-work instructions. Keep important files available through approved systems and test the connection before a scheduled call. The internet-for-work-and-classes guide helps with a practical backup plan.

A short checklist for the evening before

  • Check the next day’s forecast and relevant warnings.
  • Put out suitable clothes and protect the documents you need.
  • Charge the phone and save the destination and contact details.
  • Confirm the next appointment and any official change.
  • Keep the transport alternative and its cost in mind.
  • Use heating only according to its instructions and the agreed household arrangement.

Our rooms for rent in Jabal Amman for students staying through winter are available by room or as whole apartments within four properties. Confirm the actual heating, laundry and billing arrangements before booking around them. For an indoor day out, compare the museums and galleries and their date-specific opening arrangements.
