Madaba and Mount Nebo from Amman: mosaics, tickets and a day route

Plan a Madaba and Mount Nebo sightseeing day with mosaic sites, separate admission, transport choices, opening hours and route advice.

Start in central Madaba for the mosaics, then add Mount Nebo with a separate transfer. That gives the day a straightforward shape: a walk through town, lunch, a hilltop visit and a planned return to Amman. Keep the two destinations separate in your transport booking so the driver knows which entrances you mean.

This is a sightseeing route

Madaba is a visitor destination south of Amman. Students attending German Jordanian University (GJU) in Jabal Amman should use the campus buildings guide for their actual university address. This outing is separate from travel to either university campus and should be planned around your confirmed class timetable.

Begin at the visitor centre

The Madaba visitor centre occupies a restored nineteenth-century building and provides a useful starting point for the town. The Jordan Tourism Board guide lists its contact as +962 5 325 3097. Use it to locate the archaeological park and ask about the day’s access to the mosaic sites before setting off.

The archaeological park contains the Roman road, Hippolytus Hall and the Church of the Virgin Mary among its remains. St George’s Church is a separate place of worship associated with the mosaic map. Include time for each entrance and any worship-related restriction; one town ticket should not be assumed to cover every building.

The park charge is on the Tourism Ministry fee schedule. Mount Nebo’s managing body publishes its visitor hours, admission categories and contact details. The two listed standard non-resident charges add to 6 JD before church admission, transfers, food or any other visit.

Understand what the Jordan Pass covers

Check the official attraction list against each exact venue. Madaba archaeological attractions appear on it; a separate religious-site ticket should not be treated as included simply because the day trip goes to Madaba. Keep Mount Nebo and church admission as separate budget lines unless your specific purchase expressly covers them.

If your wider trip includes Petra, our Jordan Wanderer, Jordan Explorer and Jordan Expert guides explain the packages. You still need a transport budget for this day. A pass is also separate from your study or work permission in Jordan.

Travel to Madaba, then arrange Mount Nebo

Greater Amman Municipality announced Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route 105 between Amman and Madaba, with stops including the North Bus Station, Sports City, Wadi Saqra and Princess Basma Street. Its launch timetable describes half-hourly service and an evening finish. Use the route information in the current Amman Bus system for your actual stop, fare and travel date. The launch notice is published by the municipality.

A public bus to Madaba does not continue automatically to Mount Nebo. Agree the onward return transfer, its waiting time and the exact pickup point in town. For a direct car from Amman, put Madaba visitor centre, the selected sites and Mount Nebo into the written quote, with a return address and passenger count.

The intercity travel guide helps with the station and connection questions. Allow time to walk from the Madaba arrival point to the first site. Do not build the route around a door-to-door journey unless that service is explicitly booked.

Give Mount Nebo its own afternoon slot

The Franciscan visitor page lists winter hours of 08:00 to 16:30 and summer hours of 08:00 to 18:00. Visit early enough to see the memorial church and mosaics without using closing time as your arrival target. The site is associated with the biblical account of Moses; present the religious tradition respectfully when visiting the memorial.

Save the managing body’s contact, +962 5 325 2938, if you need to ask about access or a service affecting your visit. For a group with mobility needs, ask about the current approach from the drop-off, slopes and seating. Weather and visibility can affect the outlook, so make the mosaics and church part of the purpose of the visit rather than relying on a distant view.

Clothing, lunch and the return

Choose shoes for walking around town, carry a layer for the exposed hill and dress with active religious spaces in mind. The clothing guide covers practical choices for Jordan. Allow a proper lunch stop before the Mount Nebo transfer, and carry water during the walk.

Before leaving town, save the return connection or driver contact offline. Budget for the final journey within Amman as well. If you are comparing apartments for rent near German Jordanian University (GJU) in Jabal Amman for student travellers, the owner offers four apartments by room or as an entire apartment. Use the confirmed property address for any pickup, then choose another outing through the Jordan day-trip guide.
