Bringing and refilling prescription medicines in Jordan

Prepare medical documents for travel, check Jordan’s personal-import rules and controlled-medicine requirements, and arrange a local prescription refill.

Arrange your medicine supply before booking a long stay. Write down how much you need for the journey and the first part of the semester, then establish how a local prescriber will handle the next supply. The same brand or a familiar-looking package does not establish that a product has the same ingredient or strength.

Jordan’s personal-import guidance

The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) says that a patient can import a personal quantity sufficient for no more than three months when supported by a prescription and medical report under its rules for unregistered medicines imported non-commercially for named patients. This is a personal-treatment route, not permission to bring medicines for sale or distribution. JFDA personal-use import guidance.

The quantity limit should not be read as automatic permission for every substance. Ask JFDA about your exact active ingredient, strength, formulation and quantity, especially for a medicine subject to narcotic or psychotropic controls. Obtain any required approval before travelling and keep it with the medicine.

Contact the regulator with a complete question

JFDA lists +962 6 563 2000, +962 6 460 2550 and [email protected] for contact. Ask which department should handle your personal-import question. Official contact information. State your arrival date, nationality, medicine details, prescribed daily quantity, proposed supply and any transit country.

Ask whether a permit, declaration, translation or document authentication is required for that medicine. Keep the written response and issued approval where applicable. The rules of a transit or onward country are separate: Jordan’s acceptance does not establish permission to carry the same product through another border.

Prepare the treatment record

RecordUseful contents
PrescriptionYour name, medicine’s generic name, strength, formulation and the prescribed directions.
Medical report or clinician’s letterThe reason for treatment and planned duration, with the prescriber’s contact details.
Medicine packagingThe labelled product, original information and expiry date.
Permission, if requiredThe issued document matching the actual substance and quantity.
Local follow-up planClinician or clinic contact and the date by which a new supply is needed.

Have the clinician check the documents before departure. Keep an accessible copy and retain originals for authorities or the treating team. Explain any special storage requirement to the airline and ask about carrying necessary liquids, devices or cooling equipment. A checked-bag allowance does not settle cabin security or medical storage requirements.

Plan the first local appointment early

Use the doctor and pharmacy guide to arrange a suitable appointment in Amman before your supply is nearly finished. Explain whether you need an assessment, continuation of established treatment or a specialist review. Ask what records, test results or referral the clinician wants to see.

For German Jordanian University (GJU) students, ask how the current student-cover process applies to the appointment and prescription. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) worker should check the medical administrator’s process. The insurance guide explains why consultation, testing and medication can have separate coverage conditions.

Speak to the pharmacist using the product details

  • Show the generic name, strength and formulation rather than relying only on a foreign brand.
  • Ask whether the exact product is available and what prescription is required locally.
  • Tell the pharmacist about allergies and other medicines.
  • Have the pharmacist and prescriber resolve a proposed substitution when needed.
  • Check the label and instructions before leaving, and keep the receipt.

Do not assume that a prescription from another country can be dispensed unchanged in Jordan. The local prescriber and pharmacist must use the procedure that applies to the medicine. If a supply problem arises, ask them for the lawful next step rather than buying from a stranger or ordering an unapproved shipment.

Storage, repeat supplies and travel days

Follow the product’s storage instructions in the actual conditions of your room and journey. Keep medicine secure and away from children or visitors. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of an expired or damaged product; do not share unused prescription medicine with a housemate.

Keep a reminder for the next appointment, insurer approval and supply date. Before a weekend or holiday, check that the prescriber and chosen pharmacy can complete the request in time. The holiday guide helps you plan around closures, and the emergency guide covers an urgent medical situation.

For apartments for rent in Jabal Amman for students arranging ongoing medical care, the owner offers four apartments by room or as a whole apartment. Confirm the actual address and any practical storage or access requirement before booking. The rental description does not establish a medical storage facility or included healthcare.
