Petra needs more time than the photograph of the Treasury suggests. You walk through the Siq to reach that façade, and the ancient city continues beyond it. Decide how much walking you want, then choose the admission ticket and transport that leave enough time to return comfortably.
Which Petra ticket do you need?
| Visitor category | Admission | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign visitor staying at least one night in Jordan | 50 JD for one day; 55 JD for two; 60 JD for three | The overnight stay can be elsewhere in Jordan. Two- and three-day tickets use consecutive days. |
| Foreign visitor with no overnight stay in Jordan | 90 JD | A different category from a student already living in Amman. |
| Qualifying resident | 10 JD | Petra requires a valid residency card issued for at least one year. A university card does not replace it. |
| Arab visitor | 30 JD | Bring the identity documents for your category. |
| Child under 12 | Free daytime entry | Separate activities and transport can still cost extra. |
Carry your valid passport. These are the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority admission categories, with resident and consecutive-day conditions. A semester student should use the category supported by their documents, without assuming that any temporary residence qualifies for the resident ticket.
A valid Jordan Wanderer, Jordan Explorer or Jordan Expert provides one, two or three Petra days respectively. The packages cost 70, 75 and 80 JD and include other listed attractions. Choose the Petra allowance before buying; Explorer and Expert days must be consecutive. The pass does not pay for your coach, meals or guide.
Travel from Amman and book the return
Jordan Express Tourist Transport (JETT) serves Petra from Abdali. The official Petra transport page lists a 06:30 outward departure and a 17:00 return. The late-October booking timetable shows the outward journey scheduled to arrive at 10:30. Plan around the times printed on your own dated tickets, including the exact return boarding point. Petra transport information; JETT live booking timetable.
For the 28 October 2026 departure, the adult booking total is 11 JD each way, so allow 22 JD for the two coach legs before transport within Amman. Reserve the return separately if it is not included in your purchase. A four-hour scheduled drive each way makes the same-day option a long outing. Two site days require a travel plan that lets you enter on consecutive dates.
Opening times and the walk inside
Petra’s dated winter timetable, from 2 October 2026 to 1 March 2027, lists the site and visitor centre from 06:30 to 17:00. Its summer timetable lists 06:00 to 18:00. Give yourself time to walk out before closure and reach the bus; closing time is not a sensible turnaround time deep inside the site. Official opening hours.
The authority describes the Main Trail from the visitor centre to Qasr al-Bint as 3.9 km one way, with a nonstop walking estimate of 1.5 to 1.75 hours. Going out and back along that route is about 7.8 km before detours. Photographs, museum stops, meals and rests add time. The Monastery is an additional climb beyond this route. Main Trail description.
A manageable first-day route
- Collect or validate your ticket at the visitor centre, use the facilities and check which routes are open.
- Walk through the Siq to the Treasury. Keep a place to rest in the plan instead of rushing straight into a climb.
- Continue towards the theatre and colonnaded street if the group is comfortable. Set a turnaround time that protects the return journey.
- Leave the Monastery or a longer climb for a second consecutive site day if that fits your ticket, fitness and transport.
This is a suggested route, not a guided departure. On a short winter visit, the Treasury and part of the Main Trail can be enough. If someone develops pain, heat symptoms or difficulty with the surface, shorten the route. Ask at the visitor centre about accessible transport and current arrangements before committing to the full walk.
Work out the full cost
| One-day example for an overnight visitor in Jordan | Amount |
|---|---|
| Petra admission without a pass | 50 JD |
| Two adult coach legs at the dated booking total | 22 JD |
| Admission plus coach subtotal | 72 JD |
| Still to add | Amman transfers, food, drinks and any optional service |
If you already hold a valid pass covering this visit, do not add 50 JD again. Treat the pass purchase as its own trip-budget line. Official optional charges include a Main Trail guide at 50 JD and a visitor-centre-to-Treasury electric-cart journey at 15 JD one way or 25 JD return. These do not include site admission; confirm the service scope and availability at the visitor centre.
What to carry
Wear shoes you have already walked in, carry drinking water, sun protection, a charged phone and a warm layer for early or late travel. Pack lunch so a queue or a change of route does not decide when you eat. Keep your passport and ticket secure, and avoid leaving the marked visitor route for an unsupported photograph.
Use the Jordan trip planner to combine Petra with other visits during your pass window. If your semester base is one of the owner’s rooms for rent in Jabal Amman for students exploring Petra, confirm your return transfer to the apartment as well as the long-distance coach. A late arrival in Amman still needs a final journey home.
