Packing for a semester or NGO assignment in Amman

Pack documents, useful clothing, study equipment and medicines for a longer Jordan stay, with a practical split between cabin bags and checked luggage.

Pack around the tasks you will do in Amman: getting to class or work, walking between streets on the hills and keeping essential documents accessible. A longer stay needs a plan for laundry and local shopping more than a suitcase filled with duplicates. Leave room to bring home the things you acquire during the semester.

For a non-governmental organisation (NGO) assignment, ask about work clothing and equipment before packing. Students at German Jordanian University (GJU) should check the requirements for their actual courses and studio work. Put specialist equipment on a separate list from ordinary household purchases.

Keep a first-day bag separate

Cabin-bag itemWhy it belongs within reach
Passport and entry documentsYou need them before receiving checked luggage.
Arrival address and contact informationThey should work without mobile data.
A change of clothes and immediate toiletriesUseful if a checked bag is delayed.
Essential legal medicines with required documentsKeep the supply and supporting paperwork accessible.
Permitted electronics and chargersFollow the airline’s battery and baggage rules.

Keep valuables and personal documents under your control. Save a secure backup of essential records separately from the originals. The pre-departure documents checklist covers approvals, booking records and insurance information.

Pack clothing you can use in several combinations

Choose clothes you can layer and wash easily. Include a warmer layer for cooler periods and air-conditioned spaces, and a weather-resistant outer layer if your stay includes wet weather. Check the forecast close to departure rather than choosing only for the weather at home.

Bring shoes with grip that you have already worn comfortably. A pair that is fine indoors may be awkward on steps or uneven paving. For a workplace, religious visit or formal university occasion, ask about the expected clothing and pack one suitable combination rather than guessing from social-media photos.

Electronics: check the label and the socket

Read the input rating on each charger or appliance. An adapter changes the plug fit; it does not change the voltage. Ask for a photo or description of the socket at your particular unit before choosing adapters, and use equipment rated for the supply and load. Avoid taking a high-power appliance simply because it fits into a travel adapter.

Bring the chargers and cables you need for your main phone and laptop, plus a practical backup for a cable you rely on every day. Put a name or label on similar chargers if you will share a workspace. Save recovery information for important accounts separately from the devices themselves.

Airline rules for batteries and specialist tools

Check the rules of every airline operating your journey. Royal Jordanian’s dangerous-goods guidance distinguishes devices, spare batteries and equipment that needs advance approval. Do not put an item in a checked bag on the assumption that a different airline accepted it previously. Royal Jordanian baggage restrictions.

Check the watt-hour rating and permitted location of a power bank before departure, and protect spare battery terminals as required by your carrier. Architecture students should check blades, cutting tools, adhesives and paints individually against baggage rules; buy locally when that is simpler than transporting a restricted product.

Medicines and personal supplies

Confirm that each medicine is legal to bring to Jordan and arrange any necessary documentation before flying. Canadian travel guidance recommends original packaging, prescription copies and hand-luggage storage. Keep the prescriber’s instructions available and discuss the supply you need for the stay. Pack a modest supply of toiletries you already use, then buy routine replacements locally. For a specific dietary or personal-care need, bring enough for the arrival period while you locate a suitable source. A familiar brand name does not guarantee the same ingredients in every product.

Study and work equipment

  • Bring the laptop and accessories required by your course or employer, with the right access permissions already arranged.
  • Check the programme’s file and software requirements before buying hardware.
  • Keep a small notebook, pens and the documents needed for the first appointment.
  • For design work, separate essential personal tools from bulky materials you can buy after seeing the studio brief.
  • Carry an employer-approved backup or recovery method for files you must access immediately.

The remote-work and online-class internet guide explains how to test a connection once you arrive. The study-space guide distinguishes public-library services from university access, so you can plan where to work without packing around an assumed facility.

What can wait until you see the apartment?

Inspect the kitchen, bedding arrangements and storage in the particular unit before buying household items. Agree shared purchases with the other occupants where relevant. The food shopping and eating guide helps with the first groceries, while the produce and bread guide covers quantities and unit prices.
