Buy produce for the next meals you expect to cook, rather than filling a bag because the display looks good. Check the unit price and the weight, and think about the walk home before adding a large melon or another heavy item. Bread is easier to buy in an amount that matches how often you eat it.

For German Jordanian University (GJU) students, combine small purchases with a route you already use. Use the grocery guide for named stores around Jabal Amman and the food-planning guide for the wider weekly routine.

Turn the pack price into a useful comparison

A JOD 0.55 pack weighing 600 grams works out to about JOD 0.92 per kilogram; at 700 grams it is about JOD 0.79 per kilogram. The exact equivalent depends on the actual weight. Keep the product’s stated range visible rather than silently treating an approximate pack as a full kilogram.

For two products with different grades, brands or packaging, a unit-price calculation is only one part of the choice. Look at the condition and how much you will use. Avoid buying more simply to reach the lower price per kilogram if part of it is likely to remain unused.

Ask for the amount you want

Useful words include kilo, half a kilo and quarter of a kilo. If speaking is difficult, show the quantity on a phone or point to a small amount and confirm the total. Ask whether the displayed price is per kilogram, bag or piece before the produce is weighed.

For packaged produce, check the net weight and the condition of the contents. For loose produce, look at the weighed amount before paying. Keep delicate items above heavier groceries so they survive the trip home.

Bread: compare the bread and the quantity

Choose the type you need and check how many pieces are included. A restaurant’s bread add-on, a bakery bag and a supermarket loaf are different products. AlRashid Restaurant’s Jabal Amman delivery listing shows five loaves at JOD 0.35; that is a menu item for that merchant, not a citywide bread tariff. AlRashid bread menu item.

Buy a small amount until you know how quickly you use it. Follow the packaging or suitable storage instructions, and check freezer space before buying extra to store. If a sandwich or breakfast bowl is your main purchase, establish whether bread comes with it rather than ordering it twice.

Build a two-meal shopping list

Choose the vegetables needed for two planned meals and add fruit for the next few days. For example, a tomato-and-cucumber side, a cooked vegetable dish and a small fruit purchase give each item a purpose. Check the oil, seasoning and cookware you already have before adding more supplies.

Write the list with quantities and a spending cap. Keep household products separate so that a bottle of detergent does not make the food total look unexpectedly high. The currency guide helps with decimal prices and change.

Carry, store and share the purchase

Try a modest first shop to judge the route home. Use a bag that is comfortable to carry and avoid leaving groceries while continuing a long walk. Follow storage instructions for the food you buy and use more fragile produce first.

If groceries are shared, agree which items belong in the common basket and how to split them. Save the receipt until everyone has checked the amounts. For a large delivery, use the ordering guide to set substitution instructions and confirm approximate-weight items.
