Make the first day about reaching the right building, getting inside and having what you need until morning. Leave the larger shopping trip and a long sightseeing walk until you have slept and checked the kitchen. On the next day, find your campus entrance and complete the errands that need an office or a working phone.
For German Jordanian University (GJU), confirm that your appointments are at the Jabal Amman campus. Save the individual building name; keep the main campus near Madaba out of a local arrival route unless your programme actually sends you there.
Before leaving the airport
- Check that you have every bag and the documents returned at passport control.
- Contact the person responsible for arrival access and say when you expect to reach the building.
- Keep your exact address and map pin available offline.
- Choose a vehicle or bus connection that works with your bags and final destination.
- Keep receipts and any baggage-report reference together.
Use the airport transport guide for the bus, taxi and app choices. A scheduled bus takes you to an Amman stop; you still need to finish the trip to your entrance. Avoid ordering a car for immediate pickup while you are still waiting for luggage.
At the apartment: the first practical checks
| Check | What to establish | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Your room or unit, key, entrance and arrival contact. | Any access problem and the agreed solution. |
| Immediate needs | Drinking water, a first meal, bathroom essentials and a place to charge devices. | What you need to buy tonight. |
| Facilities | The equipment and supplies actually available in your unit. | Missing or faulty items to report. |
| Booking record | The condition and items included in the agreed handover. | Dated notes or photos where appropriate. |
Ask how to report a fault and how bills or shared supplies are handled. Inspect the particular unit rather than assuming every apartment has the same equipment. If an issue needs attention, describe it clearly and keep a record of the response.
Keep the first meal and shop small
Buy enough for the night and the next breakfast. Check storage and cooking equipment before buying ingredients that need a full kitchen. If you order food, use a reachable local contact number and give the entrance details, not only a broad neighbourhood name.
The grocery guide includes named shopping options; the breakfast and lunch guide covers local meal choices. A longer produce shop is easier after you have tried the route home without heavy bags.
Get a local line working and test it
Bring the passport and follow the operator’s registration process for your chosen package. Test data with Wi-Fi switched off, and test calls and messages if those are part of the plan. Save the number, renewal date and account app while you have help available. The SIM and eSIM setup guide explains the steps.
If you use a digital SIM, keep the profile installed while resolving a connection issue. Orange Jordan says its activation QR code is single-use and a replacement code is needed after certain profile or device losses. Orange Jordan digital SIM guidance. Keep your home line’s roaming settings under control if you leave it active.
Day two: find the classroom before you need it
Open your latest timetable and write down the full building, room, course and start time. Walk to the entrance during daylight and ask the relevant office about the room if the naming is unclear. The university’s Jabal Amman Campus Office locates the campus around First Circle; its buildings are spread through the neighbourhood. University Jabal Amman campus information.
Use the campus buildings and classroom guide for a message you can send when a room code is incomplete. Add the appointment to your calendar with time to reach the entrance. Keep the phone number or email of the person expecting you.
Do office errands in a useful order
Put deadline-based tasks first: check-in, a document submission or a registration appointment. Bring the originals and copies specified by that office. Ask for the next step and deadline before leaving, and save the receipt or acknowledgement.
Keep immigration tasks on their own list alongside the institution’s instructions and the visa and residence guide. Completing a university check-in does not by itself complete every entry or residence requirement. For study accounts and induction, use the first-week university checklist.
Build one repeatable local route
Choose a short route joining your entrance, a grocery option and your campus building. Notice crossings and any steps; try it before carrying a full basket. If you need a bus, check the departure and return stops separately and arrange payment before boarding.
The transport guide explains routes and payment. For a low-pressure first outing, follow part of Rainbow Street and First Circle and return while you still recognise the route. Save a longer downtown trip for a day with more time.
What should be settled by the second evening?
Aim to know how to enter the building, contact your arrival host, reach the next appointment and buy immediate essentials. Have your local number or another dependable contact method working, and keep the next deadlines in your calendar. Any unresolved problem should have a named contact and a follow-up time.
Our rooms for rent in Jabal Amman for a student arrival are part of four apartments, also available as whole apartments. Confirm the unit, dates, cost and access arrangements before travelling. The first-week Amman guide picks up the remaining tasks once these first two days are settled.
