Driving in Jordan as a visiting student or worker

Check both your permission to drive and the vehicle agreement before arranging a car. A rental counter accepting a card or passport does not settle every licence or insurance condition. For a longer stay, ask how your residence status affects the document you can use.

Carry the licence and permit that apply to you

An International Driving Permit (IDP) accompanies a national driving licence; it does not replace it. Obtain the required permit through the authorised issuer before travel. Keep the original national licence and the applicable permit with you, and ask Jordan’s licensing authority about any status-specific condition.

Passport or licence contextWhat the cited government guidance says
United Kingdom (UK) licence holderCarry the UK driving licence and the 1949 IDP. Obtain the permit before leaving the UK.
Australian licence holderCarry a valid Australian licence and an IDP; a digital licence may not be accepted.
United States (US) visitorUS guidance describes a Jordanian licence or a foreign licence with an IDP; it separately says temporary visitors can use a valid US licence to rent green-plated rental cars.

These are nationality-specific descriptions, not permission for every foreign licence holder to drive any borrowed vehicle. For a semester or employment-related residence, obtain the applicable answer before relying on a visitor arrangement. Read the vehicle agreement

Identify who is authorised to drive, the vehicle type and the geographical area covered. Ask the provider about age and licence-experience conditions, deposits, payment cards, fuel, mileage, pickup and return. Do not add another driver informally because that person also has a licence.

Inspect the vehicle with the provider. Record existing damage, tyres, lights, fuel level and the emergency equipment supplied. Keep the signed condition record and return instructions. Ask how to contact roadside assistance and what the provider requires after a breakdown or accident.

Insurance needs more than a broad label

  • What motor cover applies to the driver and vehicle?
  • What excess or deductible could you owe after a covered claim?
  • Which damage, uses or locations are excluded?
  • Are tyres, glass, recovery and replacement transport included or separate?
  • What report and notification deadlines apply after an incident?

Travel medical insurance and the vehicle’s motor insurance do different jobs. Check the relevant documents for each, particularly for a work journey. The health-insurance guide explains medical coverage, while the work-travel guide covers employer approval and vehicle arrangements.

Road rules and planning

Official travel guidance says drivers and passengers must wear seatbelts and vehicles must carry a fire extinguisher and warning triangle. Follow posted speed limits and do not use a handheld phone while driving. A navigation instruction does not override a road sign, closure or police direction. Vehicle and traffic-law information.

Set the destination before moving and let a passenger handle a changed pin where possible. For unfamiliar journeys, leave enough time to find the entrance and stop safely. Australian guidance highlights the difficulty of unlit rural roads and the need to remain at the scene of an accident until traffic police attend. Road travel and accident procedures.

Parking around a Jabal Amman building

Ask where parking is permitted near the actual apartment or university entrance. Do not assume that an empty space is private parking included in the rental. Check signs and restrictions, avoid obstructing entrances and allow for a walk between the space and the building.

German Jordanian University (GJU) students should confirm the teaching building and any university parking arrangement. The Jabal Amman campus guide distinguishes local premises from the main campus near Madaba. A car route to one campus does not describe the daily journey to the other.

If an accident happens

Call 911 for police or urgent help, describe the location and follow instructions. Do not leave the scene before police attend and take the required statement. Contact the vehicle provider and insurer through their stated process, and retain the report, reference and relevant records. The emergency guide gives the details dispatch needs.

For a breakdown without immediate danger, use the agreed assistance route and follow safe instructions about where to wait. Do not undertake a hazardous roadside repair or leave passengers exposed to traffic while you search for a telephone contact.

Compare driving with the journey you repeat

Add fuel, parking, the vehicle charge and any agreed excess exposure to your planning. A room near classes may let you use buses or taxis for occasional trips instead. The intercity travel guide helps compare a coach with driving for a weekend.

For apartments for rent in Jabal Amman for students comparing driving and public transport, the owner offers four apartments by room or as a whole apartment. Confirm the address and any parking arrangement directly; this guide does not promise a parking space or a vehicle service.
