Internships and volunteering in Jordan: permissions and preparation

Prepare a lawful, well-defined placement with a Jordan host, including entry and work responsibilities, supervision, expenses, insurance and safeguarding.

Ask the host to describe the actual work before accepting a placement. “Internship” and “volunteering” can cover very different activities. The duties, organisation, nationality and legal status matter when the responsible authorities determine which approvals are required.

Get the role in writing

An internship with an organisationHours, location, payment or allowance, supervision, duration and any work-related approvals.
Volunteer activityTasks, beneficiary contact, supervision, expenses and the host’s responsibility for legal and safeguarding arrangements.

Do not treat the absence of wages as proof that a placement is exempt from permission requirements. Ask the host to obtain a clear answer for the role before you begin. The Ministry of Labour work-permit guide distinguishes occupation, sector and employer procedures, including arrangements for international and foreign entities.

Entry permission and permission to work are separate

The Ministry of Interior (MOI) work-entry service is applied for while the worker is outside Jordan. Its published file includes a passport or travel document valid for at least six months, a Ministry of Labour recruitment approval letter and the relevant professional licence for an institutional applicant. Official work-entry application.

The host should identify whether that route or another lawful arrangement applies to your activity. Ask who submits each application, who pays each charge and what document tells you it is approved. A tourist visa or Jordan Pass purchase does not establish permission to work. The visa guide explains the different entry and residence categories.

Work permission and residence can also have different renewal dates. Keep copies of the issued documents and ask how a change of role, location, employer or duration affects them. Use the longer-stay checklist to record deadlines and the relevant registration tasks.

For German Jordanian University (GJU) students

Obtain the university’s academic approval before assuming an outside activity counts towards your course. Agree the learning outcomes, attendance, supervision, evaluation and any required final report. Keep the host agreement and learning agreement aligned if duties change.

If your classes are in Jabal Amman, establish where the placement actually takes place. A host in another district or city can add a substantial commute to the week. The university paperwork guide and office commute guide help keep the academic and travel arrangements practical.

Supervision and a realistic first week

  • Name the day-to-day supervisor and a second contact if that person is absent.
  • Agree the working hours, location and how an absence is reported.
  • Ask what induction, equipment and training happen before you start a task.
  • Clarify which decisions you can make independently.
  • Set a review point to discuss progress and change duties if necessary.

For a non-governmental organisation (NGO), ask about confidentiality, beneficiary contact and access to case information. A new volunteer should not be left to handle sensitive work simply because they speak a useful language. The information-handling guide explains why personal devices and shared spaces need care.

Expenses, allowances and insurance

Separate a wage, an allowance and repayment of approved expenses in the written terms. Ask whether transport, meals or equipment are included, which receipts are needed and when repayment occurs. Do not assume an offer of “expenses covered” pays every journey between your apartment and the office.

Confirm medical cover, workplace accident arrangements and any activity-specific insurance before starting. If a host asks you to join a field visit, identify the approved vehicle, supervisor, communication plan and emergency contact. The insurance guide and field-trip guide cover those questions in more detail.

Safeguarding and respectful participation

Ask for the host’s safeguarding policy, code of conduct and confidential reporting route. Establish who can give permission for a photograph, interview or visit, and whether consent can be withdrawn. Avoid sharing beneficiary stories or images through personal social accounts. The ethical volunteering guide explains informed consent and the limits of a visitor’s role.

If the duties differ materially from the agreement, raise the change with the supervisor and, for a placement, the university. Keep a record of the concern and use the organisation’s reporting process where appropriate. Do not continue a regulated task merely because it appears on an informal rota.

Finish the placement cleanly

Agree the end date, handover, return of equipment and any assessment or reference process. Remove organisational information from personal devices according to the employer’s instructions and return access credentials through the approved route. Check any residence or work-permission consequence before extending your stay.

For apartments for rent in Jabal Amman for NGO interns and university placement students, the owner offers four apartments by room or as a whole apartment. Confirm the address, dates and rental terms after the placement location and approval route are clear. The moving-for-work guide links the remaining arrival tasks.
