For a holiday in Jordan, the standard single-entry electronic visa costs JOD 40 and is valid for three months. If you plan to leave and come back during the trip, there are two-entry and multiple-entry options. Students, workers and people joining family also need to arrange the paperwork for the purpose and length of their stay.
Your passport nationality and travel document determine the entry route. A visa gives you permission to travel for entry under its conditions; residence permission covers your stay in Jordan. The sections below explain the fees, documents and steps for the main visitor categories, including the rules for a semester in Amman.
Choose your route before booking
| Your plans | The route and what it covers |
|---|---|
| One holiday in Jordan | A single-entry visa covers one arrival. Eligible tourists can obtain it electronically or at an eligible arrival point. A qualifying Jordan Pass purchase can waive the tourist visa fee. |
| Jordan, a side trip abroad, then Jordan again | A two-entry visa covers two arrivals within its validity. A multiple-entry visa suits repeated visits. Both still limit the length of each stay. |
| A course or exchange semester | Arrange study entry paperwork with the educational institution. After arrival, complete the residence or extension procedure appropriate to your nationality and course. |
| A job or internship | The employer handles the work-related approvals. Work entry, labour permission and work residence are separate parts of the process. |
| A family visit or business meeting | Use the visit route for your purpose. A visitor needing prior approval must complete that application while outside Jordan. |
| Joining family to live in Jordan | A qualifying Jordanian or resident family sponsor applies for family residence for the dependent inside Jordan. |
| Treatment or a journey through Jordan | Medical visits have a Ministry service; restricted-nationality transit has its own application and a maximum 72-hour stay. |
These purposes appear in the Ministry’s visa service directory. Choose the purpose of the trip as well as the number of entries. Paying for a longer multiple-entry visa does not replace study or employment approvals.
Who needs approval before travelling?
The Ministry describes a nationality as “restricted” when prior entry approval is required. Its published list names the following countries:
| Region | Countries on the restricted list |
|---|---|
| Asia | Afghanistan, Iran, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Iraq, Yemen and Bangladesh. |
| Africa | Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Angola, Uganda, Botswana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Tanzania, Togo, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Mali, Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria and Sudan. |
| Other countries listed | Belize and Cuba. |
Travel documents issued by countries other than Vatican City are also treated as restricted in that list. Prior-approval status and exemption from visa fees are different questions. Source: Ministry nationality classification.
Residence abroad and nationality exceptions
A qualifying foreign residence permit or US or Schengen visa can change the prior-approval route for some travellers. The Ministry’s FAQ describes a route for Iraqi, Libyan, Yemeni, Sudanese, Mauritanian, Comorian, Djiboutian and Somali nationals with residence valid for at least six months in a non-restricted country, plus a return ticket when arriving by air, or a US or Schengen visa valid for at least six months.
That FAQ requires prior approval for ordinary passports from Nigeria, Iran and Bangladesh, and travel documents other than Vatican-issued ones. Exceptions depend on the passport presented. Source: Ministry nationality exceptions.
Use your actual nationality and document type when applying, including any residence permit that supports your eligibility. A second nationality or residence abroad should never be entered as the passport you will use unless it is the travel document you are presenting.
What each visa price includes
The amounts below are the Ministry’s electronic entry visa charges in Jordanian dinars. The direct electronic visa service lists no additional service charge. Payment options include credit cards, eFAWATEERcom and supported local bank channels. Source: electronic visa fees and payment methods.
| Visa option | Fee | What you can use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months, one entry | JOD 40 | One arrival during the visa’s validity. Suitable for a visit that stays entirely in Jordan. |
| 3 months, two entries | JOD 60 | Two arrivals during the validity period. For example, arrive in Jordan, travel abroad once, then return before the visa expires. |
| 6 months, multiple entries | JOD 120 | Repeated arrivals during six months. Each visit has its own permitted stay. |
| 1 year, multiple entries | JOD 200 | Repeated arrivals during one year, with a separate stay allowance on each visit. |
| 5 years, multiple entries | JOD 350 | Repeated arrivals during five years. This is an entry visa, not five years of continuous residence. |
| 5 years, multiple entries for US nationals | JOD 110 | The Ministry lists a special five-year multiple-entry price for US nationality. |
For visas valid for six months or longer, the Ministry states that there is no fixed limit on the number of visits during validity, and that the border grants three months of stay on each visit. An electronic visa can be used up to its expiry date; it no longer has to be used during the first two months after issue. Source: visa validity and repeat-entry rules.
These payments cover the entry visa. They do not include a university’s charges, a labour permit, residence services, medical tests or attraction tickets. A multiple-entry visa also leaves the purpose-specific conditions of study and work in place.
Tourist entry: documents and arrival steps
Prepare a passport valid for at least six months after arrival, a clear copy of its identity page, a passport-style photograph for the application, your flight itinerary and accommodation booking details. Keep any document supporting a nationality exception with you. Source: Jordan government document checklist.
For an eligible visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, complete the entry formalities and pay the visa charge at the arrival visa desk before passport control, or present your qualifying Jordan Pass for the tourist fee waiver. Keep your accommodation address available and check the stay recorded when your passport is stamped.
Eligible travellers can also obtain an electronic visa before departure. The visa on arrival and electronic visa are ways of obtaining entry permission; neither expands the activities allowed under the visa. The government describes both routes on its visa information page.
How to apply online
- Open the Ministry e-services portal, select English and choose Electronic Visas, your applicant type and nationality category.
- Use the direct application without an account if eligible. For prior-approval services, use an account or the authorised institution’s application.
- Enter passport and travel details, choose duration and entries, and attach the documents required for the service.
- Pay when requested. Eligible direct electronic visas are issued after payment; prior-approval requests must pass review first.
- Save the reference, follow the application status and provide any requested information. Print and keep the issued visa or approval for travel.
Review can include an interview. An application receipt is not an issued visa. Source: Ministry application instructions.
Jordan Pass: admission, exclusions and the visa waiver

All three Jordan Pass packages include admission to more than 40 attractions and downloadable brochures. The package price changes with the number of Petra visit days:
| Package | Petra access | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Jordan Wanderer | One day | JOD 70 |
| Jordan Explorer | Two consecutive days | JOD 75 |
| Jordan Expert | Three consecutive days | JOD 80 |
For full package details, compare Jordan Wanderer, Jordan Explorer, Jordan Expert. Each guide covers costs, included admission, restrictions and a suggested Petra plan.
For the tourist visa fee waiver, purchase before arriving in Jordan and stay at least two whole nights, or three days. A one-night visit does not meet the minimum. Source: Jordan Pass packages.
Included places include Petra, Jerash, Wadi Rum, Amman Citadel, the Roman Theatre in Amman, Ajloun Castle and Karak Castle. Admission to Wadi Rum does not include a jeep tour or a camp booking. Source: included attractions.
- The waiver covers a single tourist entry. It does not pay the fee for a multiple-entry visa or replace prior approval where your nationality needs it.
- The pass permits one entry to each included attraction, except for the additional Petra days in Explorer and Expert. Those Petra days must be consecutive.
- Petra by Night and ground transport are excluded.
- The issuer says Jordan Pass is unavailable to holders of Arab nationalities. Children under 12 enter the attractions free when accompanied by parents; that attraction concession does not itself establish a visa exemption.
- Keep a printed copy of the emailed pass and carry your ID for admission.
These conditions come from the Jordan Pass FAQ. The pass is personal, non-transferable, non-refundable and non-exchangeable. It does not cover guided visits or temporary exhibitions, and unused admission is not refunded. Its attraction access lasts one month from the first site visit. Source: pass terms.
Eligible purchasers receive an emailed e-visa valid three months from purchase. Before expiry, request a free three-month Tourism Ministry extension if delayed. After that extension expires, visa fees apply; the sightseeing ticket remains valid for three months from entry. Source: checkout notice.
Student visas: before you arrive
For the Ministry’s study visa service, a Jordanian educational institution submits the request for a foreign student who is outside Jordan. This is the entry-approval stage, so send the documents to your university or school before travelling. The required file contains:
- A copy of the passport or travel document valid for at least six months.
- Proof of student status.
- A copy of residence permission valid for at least six months if you live in a country whose nationality you do not hold.
The institution submits the application electronically and receives the approval notice. Its validity follows the visa or approval issued. Keep the notice for your journey. Source: study visa requirements.
For a language course, establish whether the school will sponsor a study application and which route covers the course before paying for travel. A short course and a full academic year can require different stay arrangements; the entry approval should match the programme you have enrolled in.
Student residence: after arrival
Annual study residence is a separate service submitted by the educational institution for students whose nationality requires residence permission. It covers issuing or renewing residence under the institution’s sponsorship. Prepare:
- Your passport copy and most recent Jordan entry stamp.
- Current proof of student status.
- Your previous residence permit when renewing.
- For travel-document holders, the required residence and return documentation for the country of departure, valid for at least six months.
The Ministry lists six months from approval as the period for using the residence approval. This is a deadline for completing the approved process, rather than six months of additional stay. Source: study residence requirements.
The study residence service card lists an ordinary application handling fee of JOD 2 per person and a processing time of 14 working days. That handling charge is separate from other residence or university charges. Allow time for additional information if requested. Source: study residence service card.
Documents for German Jordanian University (GJU) students
German Jordanian University (GJU) identifies four useful documents for its residence and extension procedures: your passport, German Jordanian University (GJU) student ID, confirmation of registration (Ethbaat Taleb) from the Registration Department, and living-place confirmation from the International Office. For two semesters or an internship after an exchange semester, its guidance recommends beginning the one-year residence process during your first days after enrolment. Source: German Jordanian University (GJU) visa and residency guidance.
Take a copy of your entry stamp to the international office and record the end date of your permitted stay. Your acceptance letter, an entry visa and a residence permit serve different purposes; keep each document in your records.

Work visas, work residence and internships
A work entry visa is requested by an individual, institution or company operating inside Jordan while the worker is outside the country. The Ministry’s document list is a passport or travel document valid for at least six months, a Ministry of Labour recruitment approval letter, and a valid professional licence when the applicant is a company or institution. Source: work entry visa service.
Once the worker is in Jordan, the employer can apply for work residence. The file includes the passport, work permit, Labour Ministry approval to issue or renew that permit, the previous residence permit for a renewal, and the company’s professional licence where applicable. Source: work residence service card.
That residence card lists 14 working days for ordinary applications and five working days for urgent applications. Its application handling charge is JOD 2 per person for an ordinary request, or JOD 100 for an urgent request covering up to five people, plus JOD 15 for each additional person. These are application handling charges, separate from labour permit and other residence costs.
For an internship, have the host establish the work and residence route before you travel, including where the university is involved. A tourist visa fee or a Jordan Pass purchase does not provide employment permission.
Family visits and business meetings
The prior-approval visit service is for a visitor who is outside Jordan and has a nationality requiring approval. It provides electronic approval before travel. Its document list includes:
- The visitor’s passport or travel document valid for at least six months.
- Residence permission valid for at least six months where the visitor lives outside their country of nationality.
- The applicant or sponsor’s passport if that person is not Jordanian.
- The applicant’s residence permit if resident in Jordan.
- A valid professional licence where a company or institution submits the request.
For a business meeting, the company applying supplies its relevant corporate document; for a family visit, the individual applicant supplies the applicable sponsor documents. The permission follows the period shown on the issued visa or approval. Source: visit visa conditions and documents.
Joining family for a longer stay
Family residence is for foreign dependants already in Jordan who require residence permission and are supported by a Jordanian or resident foreign sponsor. A foreign sponsor must have valid annual residence. The file includes the dependant’s passport valid for at least six months, latest entry stamp, previous residence for renewal, sponsor’s passport and proof of the foreign sponsor’s lawful residence.
Add the marriage certificate and family book where relevant. A court dependency document is required for children over 18 and for dependants other than children or a spouse. A five-year residence request additionally needs the Borders and Residence Department’s approval letter. Source: family residence eligibility and documents.
The family service cards list 14 working days for ordinary applications and five for urgent applications. Application handling costs are JOD 2 per person ordinarily, or JOD 100 urgently for up to five people, plus JOD 15 for each additional person. These application charges are separate from the residence charges payable for the case. Source: family application charges.
Coming to Jordan for medical treatment
Medical entry applications have a dedicated Ministry service. Contact the receiving hospital’s international patient office before departure and prepare your passport, medical report and the hospital’s letter explaining the treatment or follow-up. Give the hospital the passport details of accompanying relatives so it can establish their entry arrangements with your application.
For a return visit to complete treatment, keep reports and official hospital letters showing why follow-up in Jordan is needed. The Ministry’s medical-entry instructions specifically identify these documents for returning patients. Source: medical-entry instructions. The visa service directory includes the treatment application.
Transit: connecting flights and entering Jordan
An airside connection and entry into Jordan are different arrangements. If you must collect bags, leave the airport or change airports, you may have to pass immigration. Give the airline the complete itinerary and your passport nationality so it can check which documents cover the connection.
The Ministry’s transit service for travellers requiring prior approval allows a maximum of 72 hours inside Jordan from entry and cannot be renewed. The required documents are:
- A passport or travel document valid for at least six months.
- Proof of permission to enter the onward country, such as its visa or a residence permit.
- Residence permission valid for at least six months if living outside your country of nationality.
- Proof of the individual foreign applicant’s lawful residence, where applicable.
- A valid professional licence if a company or institution submits the application.
Print the approval before travel. The 72-hour rule belongs to this transit service, not to every passenger making a flight connection. Source: transit visa service.
Land borders, return trips and departure tax
King Hussein Bridge, also called Allenby Bridge, does not issue visas on arrival. Travellers who need a visa must arrange it before reaching that crossing. It is a different crossing from Sheikh Hussein, also called the Jordan River or northern crossing. Source: King Hussein Bridge entry guidance.
The Jordan Pass issuer lists visa on arrival for eligible nationalities at Queen Alia Airport and Sheikh Hussein. At Wadi Araba, it describes a route for eligible Jordan Pass holders staying at least two whole nights. Arrival arrangements depend on the crossing, so keep the approval or visa needed for the route you actually use. Source: Jordan Pass border conditions.
Land departures carry a JOD 10 departure tax payable in cash. Keep that amount separate from the entry visa charge. Source: land departure tax.
Exit and return permission for restricted nationalities
The Ministry also has an exit-and-return service for restricted-nationality visitors already inside Jordan. Apply from Jordan before the trip out. Its file requires the passport or travel document valid for at least six months and latest entry stamp, evidence of the reason for returning, proof of the foreign individual applicant’s lawful residence, and the professional licence if a company applies. Print the approval; its validity follows the period issued. Source: exit and return visa requirements.
Extending your stay beyond arrival permission
On 8 January 2026, the Ministry announced three months of temporary stay at the border for foreign arrivals, with work-visa arrivals excluded. Check the actual stay entered in your passport. Source: three-month arrival stay announcement.
A temporary stay extension is applied for while you are inside Jordan. The service allows a stay reaching no more than six months from your original entry date. It does not add six months to the end of your existing stay. Prepare a passport or travel document valid for at least six months, the visa used to enter and the most recent entry stamp.
Submit the extension request through the Ministry portal before your stay expires, then follow the instructions on the decision. The service page lists two months from approval as the period for using the approval. That approval-use period is separate from the final date of authorised stay. Source: temporary stay extension service.
Residence registration, address documents and fines
Visitors staying more than 14 days must register within 14 days where the registration rule applies. The UK government’s Jordan guidance identifies exemptions for tourists, annual residence holders, pilgrims and transit visa holders. The office is the police station with a residence extension office nearest your accommodation, and the procedure includes fingerprint and iris biometrics. Failure to register when required carries a JOD 200 fine. Source: residence registration rules.
The US government’s registration checklist lists a copy of the passport identity page and latest entry date, the rental contract where applicable, the property ownership deed and the owner’s ID. If you rent a room or apartment, arrange the relevant copies with the owner early. Source: address registration documents.
Registration does not extend a stay. A student may need both registration and a residence application. Keep the registration deadline and the visa or stay expiry as separate dates. Overstaying can also attract a daily fine; paying a fine at departure does not grant permission to stay longer.
For longer stays, health screening can form part of the residence process. UK entry guidance lists an HIV test for stays over 30 days and JOD 20 for the health certificate. Include that in your preparations with the university or employer handling your residence. Source: health screening requirements.
