Compare insurance against the care and activities you expect during the whole stay. A policy covering hospital admission may leave ordinary consultations and prescriptions outside the benefit. A travel policy may have a maximum trip length that is shorter than your semester. Put the actual dates and intended work or study into every quote request.

Identify cover you already have

For German Jordanian University (GJU), ask for the current student benefit schedule, medical network and referral instructions. Its incoming programme guidance describes limited coverage and recommends additional international or travel health insurance. University incoming insurance guidance. Ask when coverage starts, whether arrival before registration is included and what happens after the semester ends.

For a non-governmental organisation (NGO) assignment, obtain the employer policy and assistance contact before travel. Establish whether the cover includes your actual work, field journeys, personal weekends and any dependants. Ask who handles authorisation and whether an organisation’s emergency travel arrangement is a separate service from medical insurance.

Compare the different jobs a policy can do

Type of benefitWhat to establish
Inpatient medical careAdmission, eligible hospital class, annual limit, per-case limit and approvals.
Outpatient careConsultations, tests and prescriptions without admission, with any co-payment or visit limit.
Travel medical coverTrip length, destination, emergency treatment and the activities included.
Evacuation or repatriationWho decides that movement is medically required, where it can be arranged and the applicable limit.
Existing conditions and ongoing treatmentWhat must be declared, which conditions are accepted and any exclusion or waiting period.

The UK government’s travel-insurance guidance explains the need to declare relevant medical circumstances, check exclusions and choose cover appropriate to the journey. Its Jordan health guidance specifically points to insurance for local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation. Apply the policy’s own eligibility and territory conditions to your nationality and residence.

A local inpatient product: how limits work

GIG Jordan publishes an individual medical product called In Only. It describes inpatient services inside and outside Jordan under the medical contract, with direct coverage through approved providers using an electronic medical card. Its published limits are in Jordanian dinars (JD):

ClassAnnual limit per personAnnual per-case limit per person
Private100,000 JD20,000 JD
First85,000 JD15,000 JD
Second75,000 JD10,000 JD
Third50,000 JD7,500 JD

The product table lists full coverage for specified in-hospital services within the approved network, subject to the contract. These benefit limits are not the price of the policy and do not establish unlimited outpatient care. A condition can reach its per-case ceiling before the annual total is used. GIG In Only benefit table.

Request a written quote for your age, nationality, residence status, dates and declared health circumstances. Ask whether you can buy that product, which waiting periods apply and what is excluded. Match a quoted premium with the exact schedule offered to you; a product name alone does not settle eligibility or benefits.

Direct billing and reimbursement

With direct billing, the provider seeks payment from the insurer under the applicable arrangement. You may still owe a deductible, co-payment or an uncovered item. Confirm the specific clinician, hospital and service in the current network, then obtain any approval required for planned treatment.

With reimbursement, you pay the provider and submit a claim. Ask which reports, itemised invoices, proof of payment and prescriptions are needed, the submission deadline and the reimbursement currency. Keep copies before handing over originals. For an emergency, seek help first and contact the assistance provider as soon as practical; the emergency guide gives the local contacts.

Calculate the share you may pay

Suppose a covered consultation costs 40 JD and your policy has a 20% co-payment with no deductible for that visit. Your share would be 8 JD and the insurer’s share 32 JD. If a separate test is excluded, that test remains your cost. This is a worked example, not a consultation price or a benefit offered by every insurer.

  • Does the quoted premium cover every day from arrival to departure, including extensions?
  • Are routine medicines, dental care, mental healthcare and physiotherapy covered or excluded?
  • Does the contract cover the activities and work you will actually do?
  • Which conditions require advance approval, and what is the emergency notification process?
  • How do you complain or appeal if a claim is refused?

Keep the policy usable during the stay

Save the policy number, assistance telephone, benefit schedule and current network in a secure place you can access offline. Put an expiry reminder in your calendar and request an extension before a longer stay creates a gap. The appointment and pharmacy guide helps with planned care, and the healthcare hub brings the main contacts together.

For apartments for rent in Jabal Amman for NGO workers and exchange students, the owner offers four properties by room or as an entire apartment. Confirm the actual address and housing dates, then use those dates when arranging your own insurance. A rental payment does not include medical coverage unless a separate, explicit arrangement says so.
