Before visiting a branch, ask whether the bank opens the account you want for someone with your nationality, residence status and source of funds. A passport is part of the file; it is not a promise of approval. Students funded by a scholarship or family support need a different explanation from an employee transferring a monthly salary.
Choose an account around how money reaches you
A student may need to receive a scholarship and pay daily expenses. An employee may need an account that accepts salary transfers under an employer arrangement. Someone staying briefly may decide that their existing cards meet their needs. Compare the full cost with the cash, card and international-transfer guide before applying.
For German Jordanian University (GJU) students, obtain the current enrolment document and scholarship or funding evidence you can provide. Ask the bank whether these meet its requirements for your proposed account. The student-paperwork guide helps organise the university side without suggesting that enrolment automatically satisfies banking rules.
Published document requirements to compare
| Bank or account | What its published information says | What to ask for your situation |
|---|---|---|
| Arab Jordan Investment Bank (AJIB) | Non-Jordanians need a valid passport and residence card; income or employment evidence and a utility bill must be within the last three months. | Which documents it accepts for scholarship or family funding, and for an address where the utility account is not in your name. |
| LINC savings account | The page includes Jordanian and non-Jordanian applicants with full legal capacity, a passport for foreign applicants, address evidence and evidence of economic activity. | The account’s minimum deposit, balance rules, charges and whether your funding documents are accepted. |
| Bank of Jordan salary account | Applicants must be at least 18 and provide an employer salary-transfer letter, with identification and address documents. | Whether your employer uses the account and which residence and salary documents you must bring. |
Sources: AJIB required documents, LINC savings account and Bank of Jordan salary account. Bank of Jordan lists a valid passport and residence card for foreign residents. Its address evidence can include a recent utility bill or a valid lease. Confirm the bank’s requirements for your exact status before the visit.
Do not assume a basic or digital account is open to everyone
Cairo Amman Bank’s published basic account is designated for resident Jordanians who meet its conditions. That eligibility does not extend automatically to a foreign student simply because they want a low-cost account. Basic-account eligibility. Ask about an account that accepts your status and request its own tariff.
An app that advertises account opening may also have identification or eligibility checks that require a branch visit. Ask whether a foreign passport, your residence document and local telephone number can complete the process. Use the bank’s official app and contact channels.
Prepare a branch folder
- Passport, current residence document and any foreign personal number requested by the bank.
- Current Jordan address and the supporting document the bank agrees to accept.
- Evidence of income, employment, scholarship or other funding appropriate to your account.
- University enrolment or an employer letter where relevant.
- Your telephone number, email, tax-residence details and any further information requested on the application.
- Original documents alongside the copies or translations the branch requires.
If you share an apartment and the electricity bill is in another person’s name, explain that before the appointment. Ask whether the bank accepts the lease or another document linking you to the address. Do not alter a bill or assume a housemate’s document proves your own residence.
Ask for the tariff before signing
Request the minimum opening deposit, minimum balance and charge for falling below it. Ask about monthly account costs, debit-card issue and renewal, replacement cards, cash withdrawals at other banks, incoming international transfers, outward transfers and account closure. Establish which charges include tax and which currency will be used.
Bank of Jordan lists no minimum-balance charge for its salary account and free primary and supplementary debit-card issuance. Those stated benefits belong to that product; they do not establish free transfers or free use of every automated teller machine (ATM). Match each promised benefit to the account in your application.
After opening and before leaving Jordan
Check your name, account currency and International Bank Account Number (IBAN) before giving payment details to an employer or scholarship office. Test access and notifications with a small transaction. Save the card-blocking contact separately from your phone and never share a personal identification number (PIN) or one-time code.
Keep the bank informed about changed contact or residence documents. Before your departure, settle remaining payments and ask how to close or maintain the account lawfully under its terms. The departure checklist covers the other accounts and services to finish.
When considering apartments for rent in Amman for students arranging a semester bank account, agree the actual address and rental paperwork with the owner. The owner’s four Jabal Amman apartments are available by room or as a whole apartment. Bank acceptance of an address document remains the bank’s decision.
