Choose a walk by its climbs and steps as well as the points on the map. A short distance across Amman can include a steep descent followed by a tiring climb. Set an endpoint, decide whether you want to walk back and keep a vehicle option for the return.
Use a map that shows the stairs
Amman Design Week and CLUSTER developed six walking trails linking Jabal Amman, downtown and Jabal Al-Weibdeh. The published map identifies stairways and their step counts. Use the walking-trails introduction and 2019 trail map to understand the connections, then check the current public route and access on the day.
The map is especially useful because a staircase may be a much more direct connection than the road around the hill. It also makes the climb visible in your planning. Do not assume a route is step-free because a mapping app draws a short line between two places.
Walk one: a short Rainbow Street outing
Start around the First Circle, follow a manageable stretch of Rainbow Street and turn back when you are ready. Use the theatre or another agreed public landmark as a meeting point. This is the easiest of these plans to shorten because you can return along the same street rather than committing to a downhill connection.
The Rainbow Street guide covers the area in more detail. Allow a loose hour or more if you want to stop for food or photographs; this is suggested leisure time, not a measured walking duration. Keep the route shorter if you have an appointment afterwards.
Walk two: from Jabal Amman towards downtown
Use the trail map to choose a descent from the Rainbow Street area towards the downtown street network. It records Youssef Asfour Stairway 2 as 132 steps and Prince Muhammad, also called Al-Istiklal, Stairway as 82 steps. Those published counts help you compare the physical demands before choosing a staircase.
Once downtown, make King Faisal Street and the surrounding market area the main part of the visit. The downtown route guide provides food and market stops. Agree a return pickup on a road a driver can reach, rather than sending a vehicle to the middle of a staircase.
A downhill start can conceal the effort needed to return. Decide in advance whether to climb back, take a different public route or book a ride. If rain, fatigue or a blocked passage changes the plan, leave the staircase route and use a clear road connection.
Walk three: downtown to the cultural streets of Al-Weibdeh
The mapped trail network links the downtown area with Jabal Al-Weibdeh. It identifies the King al-Hussein, or Al-Kalha, stairway as 90 steps. Use that connection only when the group is comfortable with the climb, then choose a limited onward walk rather than trying to visit every gallery.
Darat al Funun’s published entrances are 13 Nadeem al Mallah Street and 9 Mohammad Ali al Saadi Street. Ask which entrance suits your visit and access needs; a second entrance does not by itself establish a step-free route through the whole site. Venue entrance details. The Jabal Al-Weibdeh guide covers the broader outing.
Pick the route that suits the group
| Route | Main demand | A useful way to shorten it |
|---|---|---|
| Rainbow Street out and back | Ordinary street walking, crossings and local slopes | Turn back earlier along the same street. |
| Jabal Amman to downtown | A chosen staircase descent and the town walk | Finish downtown and use a vehicle return. |
| Downtown to Al-Weibdeh | A staircase climb and an onward hillside walk | Make one cultural stop the endpoint. |
These are route choices rather than guaranteed travel times. Pace, crossings, stairs and stops affect the day. Choose shoes with grip, carry water and keep the map available offline. For hotter or wetter days, the seasonal guide helps you adjust clothing and the length of the outing.
Keep the route public and the return simple
Respect private entrances and any closed section. A courtyard visible from a staircase can still be someone’s home. Ask before photographing people and keep steps clear when stopping. The local orientation guide explains street names and landmark addresses; the taxi guide helps you choose a workable pickup point.
For an Amman base, the owner offers four apartments by room or as a whole apartment. People looking for rooms for rent in Jabal Amman for students who enjoy walking around Amman should confirm the exact property address before estimating a daily route. The actual entrance and return climb matter more than the neighbourhood name alone.
