Ask the organisation where you may work and which systems you may use before setting up a remote routine. The answer may differ for a public presentation, ordinary administration and a document containing personal information. Choose the connection and setting to match the task.
Get the work arrangement agreed
For a non-governmental organisation (NGO), confirm whether working from the apartment, a café or another location is allowed for your role. Ask which device, accounts and storage are approved, whether a particular network connection is required and who supports problems outside the office.
Keep employment and immigration questions with the responsible human-resources contact. A remote-work arrangement is not itself proof of permission to work in Jordan. The pre-assignment questions guide and moving-for-work guide explain the broader setup.
Check the connection with the work you need to do
Test a video call, a normal upload and the systems you are authorised to use at the time you expect to work. A speed result alone does not tell you whether a long call will remain comfortable or whether your account can reach the required service. Keep a backup plan for a failed connection.
The remote-work internet guide and phone and internet overview explain local connectivity choices. For a backup through your phone, check the remaining data and plan conditions. Ask the employer whether tethering and the proposed mobile connection are permitted for the work.
Use the organisation’s security controls
The United States National Security Agency (NSA) guidance on wireless devices in public settings recommends organisational authorisation before public remote work and highlights risks around public wireless connections. Treat a café’s password as a network detail, not a complete decision about handling sensitive information there.
Use the organisation’s required virtual private network (VPN), authentication and device updates. The Scottish Government’s remote-working guidance also covers password-protected connections and keeping confidential information off public wireless networks. Your employer’s information-technology team should specify which tools and settings apply to your systems.
| Work item | Decision to settle first |
|---|---|
| A public document | Which account and location may be used to edit or share it. |
| A confidential call | Who could overhear it and whether the proposed setting is permitted. |
| Personal or programme information | Approved device, access controls, storage and retention process. |
| An external print job | Whether the file may leave the organisation and who approves the transfer. |
| A connection failure | Which work can continue offline and who receives the update. |
Keep calls and screens private
Check what is visible behind you and what is readable on the screen before joining a call. Use headphones where appropriate and choose a setting where the discussion will not be overheard. Lock the device when stepping away and follow the organisation’s process for storing it.
In a shared home, agree quiet periods and a place for ordinary work without assuming another tenant must change their whole routine. A separate room may help with privacy, but the organisation still needs to approve the setting and connection. Keep printed documents away from shared surfaces.
Print only what the task requires
Before using an outside service, remove unnecessary personal information and obtain any required approval. Send only the authorised file through the agreed channel. Ask how the job will be collected and what happens to copies or production files, then follow the organisation’s retention instructions.
The Amman printing guide covers file specifications and collection. It does not establish that a commercial printer is approved for confidential material. If the file cannot leave the organisation, use its approved printing process instead.
If a device or connection is lost
- Report the issue through the organisation’s designated support route promptly.
- Keep a record of the affected device, account and approximate time without circulating sensitive contents.
- Follow instructions for account access, remote protection or replacement equipment.
- Avoid moving work into a personal account as an improvised fix.
- Tell the relevant colleague which deadline or meeting is affected and agree the next step.
If a field visit is involved, follow the field-trip communication plan as well. Photos, interview records and consent information should stay in the approved system described in the ethical content guide.
Choose the home setup around confirmed needs
For apartments for rent in Jabal Amman for NGO staff working between home and office, the owner offers four properties by room or as an entire apartment. Ask about the actual arrangement and any facility you require. Confirm the office journey and employer’s work rules before treating the apartment as a regular work location; keep household bills and approved work expenses as separate records.
