Jerash and Ajloun work as a combined day when the transport between them is arranged. Jerash has a large archaeological site; Ajloun’s castle adds another stop, a separate approach and more walking. If you are relying on local connections, visiting one place properly can be the better use of the day.

Choose one site or a combined trip

Choose Jerash for an extended walk through a Roman city, with colonnaded streets and theatres. Choose Ajloun Castle for a more compact visit focused on a medieval hilltop fortification. The Jerash tourism guide describes the Cardo, theatres and Nymphaeum; the Ajloun guide places the castle’s first construction in 1184 under one of Saladin’s generals.

For a combined outing, visit Jerash first, take lunch after the main walk and continue to the castle only when the arrival leaves enough time inside. This order is an itinerary suggestion. Reverse it if your confirmed transport, weather or a site notice makes that more practical.

Admission and what it covers

Ajloun Castle3 JDCastle and museum
Combined admission13 JD per personSeparate tickets for the two sites

These are the Tourism Ministry admission charges. Both sites appear on the Jordan Pass list, so a valid pass covering the visit can replace these admission payments. Transport, a guide and food remain separate. The castle ticket does not establish admission to a separate forest-reserve activity.

Carry your passport or the document required for the ticket category. Students should not assume a university identity card automatically brings the resident price. If you are buying a pass mainly for Petra, compare Jordan Wanderer, Jordan Explorer and Jordan Expert before adding northern visits to the same attraction-use window.

Arrange the whole transport chain

For an organised day service, check the JETT live timetable for a dated bookable departure and its inclusions. A transport-only ticket can leave site entry or lunch payable separately. Save the meeting-point pin and the return time; Amman services can use different stations.

For local public transport, ask for the current Jerash or Ajloun departure at the relevant station and confirm where the vehicle terminates. Town arrival and castle arrival are different destinations. Establish the local transfer and return service before boarding, particularly if you plan both sites. The intercity travel guide explains what to ask about stations, luggage and last connections.

A shared private vehicle can make the combined route easier to organise. Get a full-route quote stating pickup, both visitor entrances, waiting time, the return address and the number of passengers. Divide that quote by the paying group, then add each person’s tickets and food. Do not divide individual admission as if it were a vehicle fee.

A realistic day structure

Part of the daySuggested use
MorningTravel from Amman and make Jerash the main visit. Allow a few hours according to your walking pace and interest.
Middle of the dayRest, eat and make the agreed transfer. Check the castle’s remaining opening time.
AfternoonVisit Ajloun Castle if there is enough time; otherwise use a shorter single-site day.
ReturnLeave with a buffer for the booked pickup or public departure.

The national archaeological-site timetable lists winter hours of 08:00 to 16:00 for these sites. Summer and Ramadan arrangements differ, and April and May have their own listed schedule. The official hours page gives the seasonal periods. A 16:00 closure requires an earlier arrival and exit plan, particularly with children or a slower walker.

Walking, clothing and food

Wear shoes suitable for uneven stone. Jerash involves exposed sections, so carry water and sun protection; Ajloun can call for an extra layer. Check the Jordan Meteorological Department forecast for both destinations before setting off. In wet or difficult conditions, reduce the plan rather than squeezing in a second stop late.

Ask the visitor centre about the entrance approach, stairs and resting places if anyone has limited mobility. The castle’s hilltop position makes the exact drop-off worth confirming. Plan a toilet and food stop before the next long drive. If you pack lunch, the cooking-for-one guide can help you turn the previous evening’s meal into a sensible travel lunch.

Before you leave Amman

  • Save the admission pass or ticket and the identity document it requires.
  • Confirm both destinations with your transport provider, including the castle entrance rather than Ajloun town alone.
  • Keep an offline return contact and enough money for the final journey from the Amman station.
  • Leave the next morning free of avoidable travel fatigue if you have a class, shift or deadline.

Jabal Amman apartments for rent for students visiting northern Jordan can provide a regular Amman base, with the owner offering rooms or whole apartments across four properties. Set the pickup using the confirmed property address. For another northern outing, compare Umm Qays with the shorter options in the Jordan day-trip planner.
