Before accepting an assignment in Amman, ask for the practical arrangements in writing. The job description may explain the work while leaving visa responsibility, medical cover or the first salary date unclear. Those details affect how much money you need to arrive and whether the proposed start date is workable.
Confirm your role and the responsible organisation
For a non-governmental organisation (NGO), clarify whether the agreement describes employment, consultancy, an internship or volunteering. Ask which legal entity signs it, where you are expected to work, who supervises you and which policy documents form part of the arrangement. The label on an email introduction does not settle those questions.
Save a human-resources contact, the line manager’s details and an alternative contact for arrival. If the office address is still being finalised, ask which location to use for the first day and who can confirm any change. Keep the addresses and paperwork guide available when arranging transport or completing forms.
Who handles entry, residence and permission to work?
The Ministry of Interior provides separate visit, study and work visa services, and its e-services description also lists different residence services. Ask your host which route applies to your nationality, role and period in Jordan; who submits the application; and which approval must be issued before travel or starting duties. Ministry of Interior service categories.
The Ministry of Labour maintains a non-Jordanian workers guide. Ask the organisation’s responsible staff to confirm any work-permit requirement and how it will be handled for your actual role. A tourist entry or sightseeing pass should not be treated as evidence of permission to work. Our Jordan visa guide explains the broader entry categories.
| Question for the host | Get a clear answer on |
|---|---|
| Who applies? | Named responsible team, your required documents and how you receive the reference. |
| When may I travel or begin? | The approval that must be in place, with a realistic proposed start date. |
| Who pays? | Application charges, required translations, any guarantee and later renewals. |
| What if dates change? | The process for delayed approval, postponed travel or a changed end date. |
| What must happen before leaving? | Any cancellation, clearance or final document handled by the organisation. |
Ask about medical cover before buying the flight
Request the insurer name, policy period, assistance number, claims process and a copy of the relevant cover terms. Ask specifically about pre-existing conditions, regular prescriptions, field travel, emergency treatment, medical evacuation and repatriation. Each can have conditions, exclusions or a separate approval process.
Ask whether payment is direct or reimbursed and how you obtain help outside office hours. If you will travel privately at weekends, check that activity and those dates with the insurer. Do not assume organisational travel cover follows you into every leisure activity.
United Nations Volunteers (UNV) publishes its own assignment financial arrangements, including insurance and assignment-related cost categories. That is a useful example of the subjects to ask about; it is not a statement that an NGO contract provides the same benefits. Use the terms of your own signed agreement.
Know when money arrives
- What amount is paid, in which currency, and on which date? Ask about the first payment separately from the normal monthly cycle.
- Which deductions or personal tax obligations require action, and who can explain the organisation’s payroll treatment?
- Are relocation, local transport or field expenses included, reimbursed or paid separately?
- Do you need a local bank account, and how are initial costs handled before it is operating?
- What receipts, approvals and deadlines apply to claims?
Build an arrival budget covering the costs you must pay before the first confirmed payment. Include rent arrangements, food, mobile service and transport. The grocery budget guide, bill-payment guide and mobile and internet overview help you set up ordinary life without confusing one-off costs with a monthly allowance.
Field travel needs its own approval process
Ask who approves a field visit, books transport, checks access conditions and provides an emergency contact. Establish the communication and check-in method, the driver’s responsibilities and the process for cancelling a trip. The field-trip guide provides a practical sequence. Permission to attend a meeting is separate from permission to collect or publish photographs.
Choose housing around the confirmed office
Ask the organisation for the actual office address and expected attendance pattern before agreeing a long rental period. For apartments for rent in Jabal Amman for NGO workers on assignments in Jordan, the owner offers four properties by room or as a whole apartment. Confirm the address, dates, occupancy and agreed costs directly, then assess the commute from that location.
Keep a departure plan in the same folder
Record notice periods, equipment return, final expenses and the documents you will need after the assignment. The departure checklist covers bills, phone accounts and the property handover. Before the start date, you should know who can answer each of these questions and which written terms you will use if an arrangement changes.
