A student grocery basket in Amman: prices and a weekly budget

Use a priced starter basket, compare pack sizes, calculate the cost of ingredients you use, and build a weekly food budget from your own meals.

A first grocery receipt and a week’s food cost are different numbers. A bag of lentils may last several weeks, while fruit and milk may need replacing sooner. Keep both figures: what leaves your wallet at the shop, and what you use in the meals you make.

The basket here combines named online products with their stated quantities. It is a practical starting point for comparing purchases, not a complete diet or a claim that every student spends the same amount. Transport, delivery, drinks, meals out and household supplies need their own lines.

Vine tomatoes, approximately 500 to 600g1.25An approximate-weight pack.
Ecuador bananas, 1kg1.59A per-kilogram price; the total follows actual weight.

Sources: Cozmo pasta, Al Rayhan lentils, Al Rayhan bulgur and chickpeas, Cozmo milk options and Cozmo produce listings. The arithmetic for one of each listed quantity is JOD 10.51, before transport or delivery and any additions. Produce weight and the final order total determine what you pay.

What this basket covers, and what to add

Use the pasta, bulgur and pulses as ingredients for several meals. Add the vegetables you plan to use, bread if you want it, and the protein sources and other foods that suit your diet. Milk is optional; replacing it changes the calculation. Include oil, seasoning, breakfast foods and drinking-water purchases in the budget.

Dry chickpeas are not a substitute you can open and eat immediately. If your schedule or equipment makes their preparation impractical, price a cooked or canned alternative with its drained weight. A lower price per dry kilogram does not settle how convenient that item is for a student cooking after class.

Before buying, check the particular apartment’s fridge space, utensils and cooking equipment. The grocery-shopping guide covers shopping options and a first-shop list; buying produce and bread explains the units you will meet.

Calculate the ingredient cost you actually use

CalculationResultMeaning
100g pasta from a JOD 1.22, 500g pack1.22 × 100 ÷ 500 = JOD 0.244About JOD 0.24 for the dry pasta only.
100g lentils from a JOD 1.60, 900g pack1.60 × 100 ÷ 900 ≈ JOD 0.178About JOD 0.18 for that dry ingredient.
75g bulgur from a JOD 1.20, 900g pack1.20 × 75 ÷ 900 = JOD 0.10The grain portion, before other ingredients.

None of these figures is the price of a full meal. Add the vegetables, oil, sauce and any other ingredients you use. Utilities and equipment are separate costs. The cooking-for-one guide gives small meal quantities so you can cost the complete recipe using your receipts.

Turn a starter shop into a weekly plan

Write the meals you expect to eat at home first. Count nights when you will be out, a class finishes late or you already have food to use. Plan two or three meals with overlapping ingredients so you can use more of each purchase.

  • Check the cupboard and fridge before writing the list.
  • List the quantity needed for each planned meal.
  • Subtract what you already have.
  • Round up to a sensible pack size that you can store.
  • Record the actual receipt, with delivery or transport separately.
  • At the end of the week, record food left and anything wasted.

For a personal spending example, a JOD 20 weekly grocery limit minus the JOD 10.51 starter basket leaves JOD 9.49 for additional food. That is an allocation you choose, not a verified price for the missing ingredients or a nutritional recommendation. If your needs exceed it, change the budget or the meal plan instead of omitting essential purchases.

Shared shopping and dietary changes

If two people buy one packet, agree whether they are sharing the whole purchase or paying for their individual portions. Keep personal food out of the shared total. A larger pack only helps if the saving survives spoilage, transport costs and disagreements about who uses it.

For vegetarian or vegan meals, compare pulses, vegetables and suitable labelled products in the plant-based food guide. Dietary substitutions need their own receipt prices; a replacement milk or gluten-free pasta should not inherit the price of the product it replaces.

Meals out and delivery need their own allowance

Record restaurant spending and groceries on separate lines. The affordable-meals guide gives named Jabal Amman menu examples. Delivery adds charges that may make a small basket poor value; use the ordering guide to compare the final checkout.
