Test the work you need to do on a connection before depending on it for an exam, presentation or meeting. Opening a website is a different task from sending a large file while a video call is running. Check the room and the time of day in which you expect to work, using your own device.
For a non-governmental organisation (NGO) assignment, follow the employer’s device, network and document rules. Students at German Jordanian University (GJU) should also confirm the platform and submission method for the course. Keep the responsible person’s contact available if an assessment or meeting is interrupted.
Download speed, upload speed and stability
| Measure | Why it matters | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Download | Receiving video, course materials or shared files. | A realistic download and the video quality you need. |
| Upload | Sending your camera, sharing a screen and submitting work. | An actual upload from the device you will use. |
| Latency and interruptions | Delays and dropouts affect conversation even with a high headline speed. | A test call long enough to notice freezes or lost audio. |
| Local Wi-Fi reach | A connection can work differently at different desks. | The intended room with the door and device position as you will use them. |
Use a speed test as one measurement, then make the call or transfer that matters. Record the result and conditions if you are comparing rooms or reporting a problem. A test beside the router does not establish performance in another part of the apartment.
A video-call reference from Zoom
Zoom’s Web App guidance recommends 2.6 megabits per second (Mbps) upload and 1.8 Mbps download for a 720p group video call. For 1080p group video it gives 3.8 Mbps upload and 3.0 Mbps download. It also notes that the application adjusts bandwidth according to the connection. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee for a shared home network. Zoom bandwidth requirements.
Leave capacity for other people and applications. A cloud backup, software update or another video call can share the connection. Agree the timing of large transfers in a shared apartment when a scheduled meeting needs the available bandwidth.
Check an upload before the deadline
For a simple calculation, a 100 megabyte file contains about 800 megabits. At a constant 10 Mbps upload rate, the transfer alone would take about 80 seconds, before overhead, server delays or interruptions. A measured connection can take longer, so a deadline plan needs more room than that arithmetic result.
Try a representative file early and confirm that the destination accepts it. Check the format, maximum size and naming requirement. Keep the original file and a submission acknowledgement in the location approved by the course or employer.
Prepare the desk and device
- Charge the device and keep the correct charger within reach.
- Test microphone, headphones and camera in the application you will use.
- Close unnecessary transfers and notifications before a meeting.
- Where practical, compare a permitted wired connection with the intended Wi-Fi position.
- Keep the meeting link, submission details and contact information available separately.
Ask permission before changing a shared router or network configuration. Moving equipment or resetting it can interrupt other users. Describe the problem and agree a suitable troubleshooting time with the person responsible for the connection.
Use a mobile backup deliberately
A phone hotspot can be useful if the plan and device support it. Test it with the laptop before relying on it, and check the data allowance, expiry and battery use. A data-only card or visitor line may have different terms from your everyday phone package.
The operator-plan comparison and recharge guide explain allowances and renewal checks. Keep enough credit or a usable backup plan ahead of an important session, rather than trying to register and activate a new line after the main connection fails.
Public spaces and employer security
Ask whether the venue permits calls and whether your employer allows the network and setting for the work involved. Use the institution’s approved authentication and virtual private network (VPN) where required. Keep confidential discussions and documents out of view of other users.
The library and study-space guide distinguishes quiet areas and bookable services. A venue advertising internet access does not establish a particular upload speed, a private meeting space or a free socket at your chosen seat.
If a meeting or submission is interrupted
Use the backup contact method and explain the immediate problem to the person responsible. Switch to an approved alternative only after checking that it works for the task. For a course deadline, follow the stated reporting procedure and retain evidence of the attempt; do not assume a later upload will be accepted automatically.
Once the session is over, review the interruption rather than rebuilding the whole setup during the next meeting. Note whether the issue affected one device, one room or the entire connection, and report that distinction clearly.
Agree home internet provisions before booking
Our apartments for rent in Amman for students and remote NGO staff are available by room or as whole apartments in Jabal Amman. Ask about the connection and shared use for the particular unit, and confirm cost and inclusions. Match the arrangement to your actual work tests rather than assuming a mobile allowance replaces a home connection.
