Start at First Circle and follow Rainbow Street on foot. For a first visit, make it an out-and-back walk: notice the side streets, stop for something you want to eat and return along a route you recognise. You can save the descent into downtown for another day.
Rainbow Street is in Jabal Amman. Students at German Jordanian University (GJU) should use the exact entrance from their timetable when connecting the walk with campus. This is a suggested public-street route, with optional stops; it does not require entry to university buildings or private houses.
Prices and budget examples are in Jordanian dinars (JOD).

What to look for along Rainbow Street
The Jordan Tourism Board describes Rainbow Street as an older Amman street with cafés, restaurants, galleries and shops. It is a place for a short walk as well as an evening meal. Pay attention to the buildings and the changes in view between the busier shopfronts. Jordan Tourism Board Rainbow Street guide.
Take photos from public space and ask before making a person or a shop interior the subject. A courtyard, roof terrace or old doorway may belong to a home or a business. Follow posted entry rules and avoid stepping into a building just because it looks interesting.
The Rainbow Theater is a useful named landmark when arranging to meet someone. A performance or screening needs its own listing, time and ticket. Check the venue’s official booking site for the programme you want; seeing the building on a walking route does not mean a show is running that day.
Allow time for pauses, rather than chasing a distance
Allow an hour or two for browsing and a food stop. Stay close to First Circle for a shorter outing, or take a side street when you have time for the walk back.
On your first visit, avoid adding every nearby hill to the route. If you are going on to downtown, save the downtown Amman guide and decide how you will return before descending. The Citadel and Roman Theatre deserve their own daylight plan if you want to go inside.
What does the walk cost?
Walking along public streets does not need an admission ticket. Food, drinks, shopping and ticketed performances are separate purchases. Read the menu before sitting down, including any service charge and tax shown on it. If a price is for a plate, combo or takeaway item, make sure that matches what you are ordering.
Choose a spending limit before leaving. For example, a JOD 5 personal food-and-drink allowance lets you decide whether to have one sit-down stop or keep browsing. It is a budget choice, not a quoted menu or a promise that every meal fits that amount. Check the actual bill before paying.
For named restaurant options elsewhere in the city, use the Amman shawarma guide. For food to take home, the grocery guide near the university is more useful than trying to carry a full shop through your walk.
Daylight, evenings and seasonal events
For an orientation walk, daylight helps you see crossings and understand the side streets. An evening visit can suit a meal or a booked performance, but plan the return before your battery runs low. Use a meeting point with a clear shop or venue name, rather than “somewhere on Rainbow Street.”
If a market or outdoor event is part of your plan, check its announced date and opening time separately. Do not build the day around an assumption that a seasonal event runs every week throughout the year. A public-street walk still works when no event is taking place.
Hills, steps and access
Wear shoes with grip and carry water. Side streets and stairways can add a steep climb to an otherwise modest outing. If you want to avoid steps, look at the route before following a shortcut and stay on a road route that meets your needs. Allow extra care on wet paving.
If you need an accessible entrance or seating at a particular venue, ask that venue before travelling. A car pickup should be on a road where the driver can stop, not at the foot of a pedestrian staircase. Give the driver the road-side meeting point and check the vehicle registration when it arrives.
Connecting the walk with student life
Keep leisure stops separate from your class arrival time on the first day. Find the university entrance first, then explore the area when you have a free period. Our first-week university checklist covers registration errands and practical preparation.
For a bus journey, the Amman transport guide explains payment and routes listed from First and Second Circles. If you will use a transport app, set up your local phone with the Jordan SIM and eSIM guide before relying on it for an unfamiliar return.
Staying in the neighbourhood
Our rooms and whole apartments for rent in Jabal Amman are available by room or as an entire apartment. Check the specific address against your university building and preferred walking route; confirm dates, price and inclusions for the particular unit. Plan the route from that entrance rather than assuming every Jabal Amman address is equally close.
